Literacy

Letters and Sounds

The letters and Sounds programme is a system for teaching children to read and develop their speaking and listening skills. It was published by the Education Dept in 2007.

For more information please follow this link or download this pamphlet.

Soundwaves

This year all of our students in Years 4-6 will be learning spelling using a new program called Sound Waves. This program allows for differentiation and focuses first on phonemes – the basic units of sound. It then explores the letters that represent these sounds and how they can be put together to form written words.

There is a website that the students can access at home so they can do activities and show you what and how they are learning! If you click on the link below it will take you to the log on and with the log on provided by the class you will have access.

T4W at Bletchley Park

At Bletchley Park students across all year levels are taught writing using Talk for Writing. It is a program that was developed in the UK by Pie Corbett and has benefits for children across all ranges of abilities and backgrounds.

T4W allows students to orally learn the language needed for a particular topic or text, before reading it and recreating it in their own writing. It focuses on high level vocabulary and is also very hands on and interactive. Talk for Writing is a very engaging way of learning to write different text types. Teachers work in teams to create highly motivating units of work, often with some fun hooks!

What is MiniLit?

MiniLit stands for ‘Meeting Initial Needs in Literacy’ and is an early literacy intervention program. It is designed to be delivered daily, for one hour, to small groups of up to four Year 1/5 students who have struggled to make adequate progress in learning to read during their first year of schooling.. It is a Tier Two school-based small group program (up to six students per group) within a Response to Intervention Framework.
